Patriotism

Unread post #1 by arnie532 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 12:16 am

My school is having an essay contest on patriotism ,and i'd like to hear what you guys think it's focused on the theme:Does patriotism still matter?

Does patriotism still matter?

When asked if patriotism still matters, I first ask myself, “What is the meaning of the word patriotism?” The general definition I found was support, devoted love, loyalty and defense of his/her country. Quickly with this definition I was able to think of many examples in my lifetime where patriotism was on full display. Every 4th of July we parade around our towns celebrating our loyalties by riding floats, throwing candy, waving flags and ending the evening with a barrage of fireworks. When September 11th took place our devoted love for our country led us to wage a war on terrorism and vow to never let ourselves be vulnerable again. When I was * years old I watched my cousin leave for war for a year and a half in Iraq. We have been living the past decade in a mode of “extreme patriotism.”
So then I ask, “What if Patriotism didn’t matter - no love, loyalty or support of someone’s country? If there was nobody to defend America we would have no armed forces, no security, our lives as we know them now wouldn’t exist. All of our rights to free speech, religion, and bear arms would be meaningless because there wouldn’t be anyone to enforce them.
I read a quote from Jimmy Carter during his debate with Gerald Ford for the
1976 Presidency, “Our system of government, in spite of Vietnam, Cambodia, CIA,
Watergate is still the best system of government on earth. And the greatest
resource of all are the 215 million Americans who still have within us the strength,
The character, the intelligence, the experience, the patriotism, the idealism, the
Compassion, the sense of brotherhood on which we can rely in the future to
restore the greatness to our country.“ While this was before my time it made me
realize that there are always going to be obstacles to overcome in our country but
as long as our patriotism perseveres we can overcome anything.
It is that patriotism that binds all Americans together, no matter where we
live, the color of our skin, patriotism matters because it is the one common
thread that weaves us together.

sorry if its a wall O' text

It matters to the Tea Party.

Because if anyone actually remembers what patriotism truly means, their entire "organization" would implode.

Yeah...Each writing contest is a different amount we have a couple a year; some are state wide or country wide while others are just in our school. It seems as though the ones in our school pay less.

It was more like an extra thing that was related with the school-not mandatory but my teacher was involved.
