The models and model XMLs are in part_models~ (editor_rigblocks~ in SporeModder), and they're assigned to an editor in editor_setup~ .

Also, now that I have found the meshes for the editors, where might the textures be?

They're part of the model file.

When I import the .rw4 to blender, all I can see is the mesh, should I use the .gmdl

No...there shouldn't be one...

Editor backgrounds aren't creations, why would there be one?
In any case, you should check "Write textures" when importing. This will dump the textures to the folder you imported the model from. From there, you can import the textures as well.
